A girl from Jersey who aspires to be part of the uppercrust urban elite, Imogene's life as a playwright in the city is curbed when her Dutch boyfriend suddenly breaks off their relationship. In an act of desperation, Imogene (Kristen Wiig) fakes her own suicide, only to end up in the hospital psych ward. They draw the conclusion that she must stay with someone who will keep an eye on her, thus placing her back in her family home with her gambling addict mother (Annette Bening) and her mother's boyfriend who claims to work for the CIA (Matt Dillon). The craziness is turned up to eleven with her dysfunctional clan around her, a life she tried to flee. This is the basic setup, but the film is much more than a look at eccentricity. This family drama is one of the most entertaining indie films I've seen in a long time with great performances culled out of every actor. I highly recommend this little-known gem.A girl from Jersey who aspires to be part of the uppercrust urban elite, Imogene's life as a playwright in the city is curbed when her Dutch boyfriend suddenly breaks off their relationship. You can feel THE MINDY PROJECT struggling to get its footing in the first four or five episodes, but by the second disc, I was hooked. It's an interesting route for Mindy Kaling to go, considering how well she played the annoying vapid Kelly Kapoor from THE OFFICE. Now she's going strong as an ob/gyn, Mindy Lahiri, who struggles with her love life while everything else is tip-top. She maintains the same fascination with gossip mags and rom-coms that Kelly Kapoor possessed, which I think may actually be reflecting Kaling's interests more than any character's. All through her hijinks, she has a gang of pals/coworkers, including Danny Castellano, who may be perfect for her, if she could only stop "hating" him for two seconds. There's also Dr. Jeremy Reed, resident lothario; Morgan, the male nurse whose criminal history is overshadowed by his big heart of gold; the Deslaurier midwives upstairs whose hippy-dippy lifestyle irritates Mindy's medical sensibilities; Gwen, Mindy's best friend who happens to be a young and perky blonde mother in wedded bliss; Betsy, the happy-go-lucky and oh-so-innocent optimist, and Shauna, the glamourous party girl, both of which run reception. I agree that this show is skewed to the mid-twenties to mid-thirties demographic, but since when is that a bad thing? Mirroring films like WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, THE MINDY PROJECT is just that: a project, a work-in-progress story of a woman learning and changing and improving herself little by little, episode by episode. My verdict? Very enjoyable and much better than I initially expected. Depending on the person (as I would skew towards female audiences with this show), I'd recommend it.You can feel THE MINDY PROJECT struggling to get its footing in the first four or five episodes, but by the second disc, I was hooked. The Vegas film has been overdone. The sheer bombast of THE HANGOVER killed the genre. Dead and buried it should be, but sadly, no, it's being exhumed once more. Billy (Michael Douglas) is marrying his thirty-something girlfriend in Vegas, thus reuniting Sam (Kevin Kline) from Florida, Archie (Morgan Freeman) from New Jersey, and Paddy (Robert DeNiro) from New York. Paddy and Billy have their unresolved issues, after the loss of Paddy's wife Sophia, but that plot point is just convenient to provide a conflict-free story with some tension. By the time they're in Vegas, everything is in full swing, starting with a hotel that has no rooms, but continuing onto an encounter with a squad of drag queens, then an interesting dance at the cards table, followed by a wet T-shirt contest and a battle in the nightclub. They recruit a lounge singer (Mary Steenburgen) who knows her way around town, while Archie gambles and Sam flirts with everything with a pulse. They really do a little bit of everything in LAST VEGAS, which is both its strength and its downfall. By doing a million stereotypical activities, lots of opportunities arise for comedy, but as a result, the story is paper-thin. It's an okay time-waster with an abundance of cute one-liners, sure, but with nothing substantial to note, I can't recommend it.The Vegas film has been overdone. This book closes the door on the ever-popular HUNGER GAMES series. While it is my least favourite of the trilogy, MOCKINGJAY may be the most important book of the three. More devastating and mature than its predecessors, this final installment deals with revolution and its consequences. It forces Katniss to question everything. It is some of the most thought-provoking literature I've ever read from the YA genre. Even as my least favourite in the series, it is still a great book. This sixth season continues where the fifth left off, dealing with Billith and his confusing unstakeable situation, including but not limited to his all-too-firm grasp on Jessica. As her maker, she is unconditionally bound to do his bidding, but what will that be? Meanwhile, Sam raises a werewolf pup, just as Sheriff Andy Bellefleur faces his own struggles with fatherhood but not without a little help from Arlene and Terry. Jason's mixed feelings about vampires turn into definitive anti-vamp sentiments subsequent to the revelations about his parents' mysterious deaths; Eric's feelings for Sookie are made known to his "sister" Nora; and, Tara and Pam start a tumultuous love affair. Yes, the excitement never stops on TRUE BLOOD and this season is certainly one to sink your teeth into! (I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself.) It's important to note that I don't feel that the quality of this series has diminished grossly, despite the tendency for strong-starters to degrade over time. No, it will never be as bright and booming as its debut, but what is? The writing is still sharp and the characters are entertaining as ever. Be that as I may, the feelings of redundancy do occur from time to time. For example, I can feel echoes of the Fellowship of the Sun (the religious movement Jason joined in season 2) in this season's anti-vampire governor Truman Burrell. However, the differences between those seasons and this one are significant enough to distinguish them. Nothing feels trite. The conflicts are fresh and the payoffs are not easily predicted; the sixth season is pleasantly sweet all on its lonesome. I recommend it.This sixth season continues where the fifth left off, dealing with Billith and his confusing unstakeable situation, including but not limited to his all-too-firm grasp on Jessica. KILLER JOE is very difficult to describe. I understand why people think it's good. I understand why people think it's bad. Both sets of people are one-hundred percent correct. This is the problem. I'll tell you what I gathered. It takes a special class of person to kill someone, but it also takes a certain type of person to want someone killed. I'm not speaking hyperbolically; I mean the real deal, the cessation of life, the final ending, death. KILLER JOE tells the story of a trailer trash family whose drug-dealing son loses his share of cocaine when his mother sells it to fix up her car. He decides to visit his divorced father and develop a plan of retaliation to get his chunk of change while promising a cut for his father and sister if they agree to the deal. All the while, his sister, the doe-eyed blonde Dottie, dances in the center of their webs of lies, deceit, and ill intentions. Privy to a whole range of information but with the innocence of a fairy princess, her father and brother offer her up on a silver platter as collateral when they can't afford the deposit to get the "job" done. What unfolds is something to behold. Director William Friedkin of EXORCIST fame delivers a dose of evil in plain ol' human form in this disturbing thriller, the film in which McConaughey solidified his career turnaround from rom-com leading man to serious dramatic actor (The first film I saw him appear this way was THE LINCOLN LAWYER, a superior and underrated film, a truly entertaining and well crafted suspenseful crime drama.) Matthew's methodical coldness injects fear into an already shady scenario. Juno Temple is equally fascinating as the enigmatic innocent in a dangerous game, the catalyst held as bait to get the ball rolling. Juno plays the role well, mixing wisdom and naivete in equal parts, like a bird with a broken wing whose got a helicopter parked out back. Emile Hirsch, Thomas Hayden Church, and Gina Gershon flesh out the ensemble as the son, his father, and his father's new wife. The low-rent characters here are all objectionable in their own way, but it's the tension building to something that keeps you rapt. Don't misinterpret my praise; this film is majorly flawed (mostly in its pacing, character motivation, and flexible story structure) and I wouldn't watch it again, but the actors are strong strong and the first screening proves at least intriguing. What's going to happen? I wondered constantly, "What's going to happen?" Clinical and corrupt but not infallible, Killer Joe Cooper tangos with the wrong clan this time around. But what is it building to, you ask? If I told you, I'd have to kill you. I hesitantly recommend KILLER JOE to age-appropriate audiences who can handle the graphic nudity and violence and rawness of the story.KILLER JOE is very difficult to describe. This film does not hold up. As a first time watcher of it in 2014, I watched it with someone who had seen it before. They seemed to like it, recalling it as delightful and whimscial and bla bla bla. Well, that assessment certainly changed by the end. It's far-fetched, and not in the way you want from the Looney Tunes. I expected more story, more fun, more something. Michael Jordan's presence is overblown and feels kind of silly now, after his big years have become something of the past. While not completely devoid of humour, I still guess this film's fanbase will always be the children of 1996. If you have fondness for this film because of that little nostalgia nugget in your mind, then it's best to leave it that way. A second screening will only leave you sour. The standard indie pick in the list of heavyweight Best Picture nominees, PHILOMENA didn't stand a shot in hell of winning, but not because of a lack of quality. Philomena Lee, the title character, an Irishwoman looking for her son Anthony, pairs up with Martin, a down-on-his-luck BBC journalist. The two haven't much in common, but together, he tries to help her find the son she conceived out of wedlock that was taken from her years before when, as a pregnant teen, she was locked away in a Catholic institution for her "sins". Her son was pried from her hands and she was a mere hour each week to see him until Philomena watches the nuns give up her child in a closed adoption to Americans who took him miles away. Years later, she investigates where he is and who he's become. Each turn holds something new. Now, when all is said and done and the truth is revealed, there are two main perspectives: the angry one of Martin's, infuriated at injustice, and the forgiving one of Philomena's, letting the past rest. (I suppose there's the nun's perspective, but I hope no one feels that sanctimonious.) For me, I felt like Martin; I wanted someone to apologize. I am so glad that this nastiness of the past was exposed in 2009. It can only help to know the truth, as without any sense of history, we are doomed to forget and thus repeat it. Despite its conflict, the film never loses its pleasantness. It glows with optimism and the sweetness of Philomena's warm soul. Overall, this film was like no other Best Picture nominee this year because of its unique tone, a balance of great tragedy and a bright sense of humour. I applaud it for that, and without question, I recommend it.The standard indie pick in the list of heavyweight Best Picture nominees, PHILOMENA didn't stand a shot in hell of winning, but not because of a lack of quality. Better than the original, the conflicts in THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY are exactly that: conflicts. I never really saw these films as light-hearted comedies; they're dramas, which means the plot points matter a hell of a lot more. In the original, THE BEST MAN, the story was essentially twenty-something romantic problems; in this one, there is a more life-or-death sink-or-swim feeling. Reuniting those with unresolved issues is bound to bring the tensions boiling back up to the surface. That is in essence this film and I think that's what made it good. I have to wonder where they will go with the third film that's been in talks since this one was released; I suspect it will have more to do with Quentin than Harper and Lance, but who knows? Anyway, compared to the first, I much preferred this sequel, a story with some substance. Debauchery: that is the word thrown around when talking about Scorsese's latest, the Oscar-nominated raunchfest THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. Bombastic as it may be, I feel there's so much more here. The words being used to compliment it are the same ones used to belittle it. To call it a dark comedy is somewhat accurate but grossly misleading; THE WOLF OF WALL STREET defies genre, yet by pigeonholing it as a comedy associates it with cheap unmemorable entertainment. That is absolutely not the case. Spanning from the eighties to today, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET is a rags-to-riches tale, akin to SCARFACE or THE SOCIAL NETWORK. It's also a biopic, based on the life of Jordan Belfort, a self-made multi-millionaire who takes matters into his own hands when he begins selling penny stocks for a fifty percent commission. He swiftly escalates into a giant on Wall Street, the new kid on the financial block who does things very, very differently. Unfortunately, corruption runs like a streak through both his personal and professional life, but where will his destructive path lead? I adored this film. In fact, I wanted it to win Best Picture. AMERICAN HUSTLE is an actor's movie. If you cling too hard to the pulse of the plot, then you'll probably be disappointed. Now, don't get me wrong; there is a story being told, a significant one, but director/screenwriter David O. Russell openly acknowledges that he wanted to capture the performances of his stellar cast, and if that required the sacrifice of the story, so be it. For some, the inconsistency of the tale being told or the uneven pacing catering toward the gravitas of his cast may be enough to turn them off. However, that was not the case for me. I watched it in theatres and was absorbed by it all. That being said, a pleasant movie-going experience does not always translate into liking the film. On my second screening, I strongly questioned its merit. As a Best Picture nominee, AMERICAN HUSTLE was up against what I deemed much greater films, like THE WOLF OF WALL STREET and GRAVITY. As much as I enjoyed David O. Russell's recent efforts with SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK and THE FIGHTER, I am left baffled here. Don't ask me if I like this film; I truly do not know. Starting with the unfortunate incident involving Tara's transformation and the wolf pack's hunt for its late leader Marcus, the fifth season of TRUE BLOOD keeps its pace going at breakneck speed, what with tangles with the Authority, one character's decision to move to Alaska, an unexpected pregnancy, the fight to protect a werewolf pup, the origin story of Pam, and lots and lots of fairies. Along with the introduction of some new characters, like Roman and Nora, and the return of some old faces, like Russell Edgington and Reverend Steve Newlin, TRUE BLOOD's fifth season packs a mighty wallop. Yes, this season is a vast improvement upon the last, as the fourth season was marred by its parade of uneven storylines and questionable villainy. Nonetheless, I fear this season doesn't stand up to the strength of the earlier seasons. Above average film, considering there really is nothing more to be said about the land of Oz and all its inhabitants, but I sincerely enjoyed the sweetness of this tale. Unfortunately, there are a lot of loose ends never properly addressed and James Franco seemed like a poor choice to play the Wizard, but otherwise, everything seemed to roll along with relative smoothness. Again, nothing groundbreaking, but there's definitely worse ways to waste your time. I'd recommend it.Above average film, considering there really is nothing more to be said about the land of Oz and all its inhabitants, but I sincerely enjoyed the sweetness of this tale. Great little flick about later-in-life love and the power of perception, ENOUGH SAID was James Gandolfini's final film before his untimely death. Boy, did he pick a good one. He is moving and sweet as a divorced father of a teenager girl headed across the country to design school who starts to believe in second chances at love when he sets his eyes on the protagonist, masseuse Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a divorced mother in a similar situation with her teen daughter heading off to college. ENOUGH SAID is all about impressions and points of view and the importance of honesty and openness, but most importantly it seems to be about love. I truly enjoyed it. I love the smart cheeky humour that underlies these films. Science and invention, two themes that permeate modern life, take a walk on the wild side in the CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS series. An inventor who managed to create a machine that produces food out of water in the first film has been hired by his childhood hero in this sequel; he receives a quest to find the very machine he made, as it is producing living, breathing food monsters. This sequel is truly delightful, fun for both children and adults, which is what makes a family film truly remarkable. I was genuinely surprised that this film didn't get a Best Animated Feature Film nomination at the Oscars, as it very much deserved it. I'd recommend it.I love the smart cheeky humour that underlies these films. The closest we'll come to a genuine DIE HARD film in this day and age, WHITE HOUSE DOWN is a fun action film. I appreciated what it set out to do. It was entertaining and exciting and that's really all I can ask of it. I'd recommend it.

BLUE JASMINE is about a depressed socialite whose former life of riches has fallen apart. Now she's starting over in San Francisco, staying in the humble abode of her sister. However, her lavish life she's left behind is not exactly as it seems. I found this story incredibly impactful, especially during this day and age where the rich and famous are adored for doing nothing of substance. Knowing people who are a bit too accustomed to excess, it's sometimes gratifying to see the snobs fall, just to bring them down to earth. We are, in the end, all human and, with the snap of your fingers, it can all be taken away. Yet there will always be those who feel they are invincible. I feel I sound sadistic with a touch too much schadenfreude showing, but I appreciated this effort more than MIDNIGHT IN PARIS or any of Woody's other recent endeavours. It's also nice to see another American-set Woody Allen film, especially after the long string of Eurocentric flicks he's been pumping out each and every year. Cate Blanchett's character Jasmine may be unclassy and morally lousy, but Cate's performance was definitely noteworthy. (That being said, I hope at this year's Oscars, Sandra Bullock's GRAVITY performance doesn't get shut out.) BLUE JASMINE's not an original story and the writing is not as tight as it could be, but it was emotionally provocative, for the most part simultaneously applauding and damning those who deserve it. I would definitely recommend it.BLUE JASMINE is about a depressed socialite whose former life of riches has fallen apart.
