Recommended to me by the library, this book falls into the category of unfolding a story and history while building community. Add it to my favorites in that category along Grace Lin’s Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and The Wheel on the…

Delightful book. Kind of a female version of Tom Sawyer.

This is my favorite book! it is fictional, but has great info about the past. It almost has the feel of freestyle poetry. This book is a must read for all!

Flipping between the Great Depression and WWI, the mystery of Manifest unfolds as two halves of a story slowly intertwine. Fans of historical fiction will hang on each new detail as Abilene Tucker learns about her father’s childhood and…

Even though this is a "young adult" book, it is so well written and full of historical details that it is a sure hit with adults, also. That could explain the large number of people requesting to read it. Hang in there; it is worth the…

Leisurely-paced, character-driven, historical middle-grade fiction with a strong sense of place and a large cast of quirky characters. The audiobook is especially good. Readalikes: Because of Winn Dixie, Wolf Hollow, Absolutely Truly, To…

Loved this book. I like to read the Newbery winners even though I am no longer an elementary teacher. This book would make an excellent movie. The characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution are all absorbing and wonderful.

Taking place in small-town Kansas during the summers of 1918 and 1936, the main character reminds me of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird. I kept finding myself grinning as I read - a wonderful story!

A wonderful read for all age groups. At first I didn't find it particularly interesting and pretty well skimmed through until it hooked me. So just had to go back to read it over again! Certainly glad I didn't succumb to my initial…

Oh, but this is good storytelling. All too unfortunately often, both "award-winning" and "historical fiction" can mean too dry and earnest to be widely appealing. That's not the case here. The characters are mischievous, down to earth,…

Detective story with lots of agenda. Homey style (charming mix of pre-teen characters sorting through clues, etc.) recalls joys of children’s lit from decades past—for this aged reader. It setting is a big plus: fun to imagine life in SE…

While this book is very predictable, Vanderpool deviates from the typical Childrens' book modus operandi, creating a refreshing and endearing novel. It is great to follow the lead character, a very average female, along her journey.…

While this book has many appealing factors (a fortune teller, a mystery, scams, breaking the law, etc.), I found that it took a lot of patience to get through its slow set-up.

This book is a sweet love letter to a small town in Kansas where WWI and the Influenza Epidemic and then the Depression and Dust Bowl hit hard. Beautiful. From a Newbery perspective, I was a bit underwhelmed. The main character's…
