Add a Commentre-release of 2001 book. G&M reviewed, describes as a cult classic
The old world gods and the new are preparing to battle, and a man named Shadow is caught in the middle of it all.
I absolutely loved everything about this book. From the supporting cast of gods to the main storyling, I loved it all. A good meaty story contemplating man's purpose in this world, and a study of what happens to the gods when we move on. Bet you can't read it without learning something. You will want to return to Gaimen's world as soon as you've left it!
I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman's and this is a wonderful piece of work. It's twisting and magical and the characters leap into life. I found myself contemplating many of the themes of belief while reading this story. The Internet or cars as New World gods isn't something previously considered but once viewed in through this frame it makes complete sense...
Interesting how he weaves all the immigrant mythologies together in a modern patchwork in a backdrop of all things Americana. It's certainly an accomplishment... but I found it too sprawling and too skewed toward male fantasy.
One of my favorite all time reads.
I believe I have read this book almost a dozen times...and each time I get something new out of it! I adore Neil Gaiman, but American Gods is really a different creature from his other stories. The concept of Old World Gods, left behind and lost in the New World and competing against Technology, is epic and brilliant. I would absolutely love to see a follow up in the future.
Tenth anniversary edition of the classic The award-winning fantasy tale about a war on Earth between old gods and new, centering on the adventures of an ex-convict named Shadow, is currently in development as an HBO miniseries. The commemorative volume includes a bonus for readers: Gaiman's preferred text--12,000 words of content that did not appear in the original--along with an introduction by him.
What a great story! Imaginative and well told! This is my favorite book by Gaiman
