Add a CommentMarchetta is the best YA author at creating smart, complex characters. Even the secondary ones have powerful back stories to which we are only given a glimpse. Here's set-up and one example: Francesca's mom Mia has become seriously depressed, throwing the family into chaos. Meanwhile, Frankie is one of 40 girls integrating a formerly all-boys prep school. The boys are aggressively resentful; she is beyond sad. The first student she shares an authentic laugh with is an apparent sociopath, who manages to reach through Mia's fog and actually help her. We never find out why this boy lives with his grandfather or where his parents are, and we don't need to. Brilliant.
