Add a CommentIf this book had been written in the 1950s, I could read it and laugh at how far we've come with breaking gender stereotypes. But it was written in 2006. It has the sensitive little girl, the boy who's obsessed with mountain men and Indians, the worried mother who doesn't like being away from civilization, and the manly, stressed out father who is a doctor but enjoys hunting and smoking. I see that it's probably just set up this way in order to contrast a "normal," "ideal" family with the horror that comes later in the novel. But by page 22 there was already too much social horror for this feminist. Maybe it improves by the end, but I'm not going to find out.
