Add a CommentThis really touched on some personal issues for me...the description of the objects that are hoarded as misplaced emotion really helped enlighten me on some issues with a loved one's struggle...cried all the way through this one. Totally worth it, if only for the intensely introverted description of the characters' experiences. This is a book for those who are prone to being quiet and still and very internal in their process. The prose is lovely, though I could have wished for something with a bit less freedom...a bit less focused on an escape from the claustrophobic intimacy of relationships, and a bit more on the redeeming powers of selfless love...still, the story is wonderfully told, the message perfectly delivered, and the writing, enchanting...
I loved this book! It was compelling on many levels. I liked the character developments and the curious connections amongst them, and I found the plot's twists and turns particularly engaging. I liked the magical realism and didn't find it hokey or hard to believe. I think Niffenegger wove an interesting story. I definitely recommend reading this one!
Read June 2011
This was an interesting book from the author of The Time Traveller's Wife. A woman dies, leaving her apartment and large estate to her estranged twin's twins. The will states that they have to live there for one year. The aunt is trapped in the flat as well, and begins to communicate with them. There are lots of twists and turns in this story, some more disturbing than others. I think I like the sub-plot of Martin, the neighbour with OCD, whose love for his wife helps him overcome his fear of germs and the outside. Overall a good read, with a creepy feel, and not a happy ending for everyone.
This story will only work for you if you have an open mind open supernatural happenings and life and the idea of having a soul that leaves your body when you die I really enjoyed all of the characters in this book, espcially OCD inflicted Martin.
Good book, but very strange. If you enjoy ghosts and superficial concepts, this book is a great read for you. Overall, Niffenegger is a great author and I definitely recommend her books. Enjoy!
This wasn't as gripping or ingenious as The Time Traveller's Wife. Lost interest as it went on (but finished it) and the ending was too far-fetched to be believable.
This was the first of Audrey Niffenegger's books that I read, while most people read "the Time Traveller's Wife" first. I really enjoyed this book. Interesting family dynamics and the hint of the supernatural. When I finally got around to reading "the Time Traveller's Wife" I didn't actually finish it. I found it boring. Interesting concept, but the writing was confusing.Thought the movie might be better, but I've been told it's not up to much, so I won't bother.
Really cool book. Concept was amazing. Very interesting ending. Recommended to basically everyone!
The Time Traveler's Wife is one of my all-time favourite books... and while this doesn't have the same compelling love story that so drew me into her first novel, it was beautifully written and a joy to read just the same. The first book I've read in a long time that made me remember why I love to read.
