Oblivious to the bizarre ways in which their lives intersect, nine characters-a terrorist in Okinawa, a record-shop clerk in Tokyo, a money-laundering British financier in Hong Kong, an old woman running a tea shack in China, a transmigrating "noncorpum" entity seeking a human host in Mongolia, a gallery-attendant-cum-art-thief in Petersburg, a drummer in London, a female physicist in Ireland, and a radio deejay in New York-hurtle toward a shared destiny of astonishing impact. Like the book's one non-human narrator, Mitchell latches onto his host characters and invades their lives with parasitic precision, making Ghostwritten a sprawling and brilliant literary relief map of the modern world.

Add a CommentA superlative 1st novel. This is more a series of vaguely connected short stories rather than the more tiresome random-lives-colliding stories moviemakers love to make. The writing, the stories and characters are top notch - although the enigmatic ending seems a bit too enigmatic (meaning artsy). I'm excited to read more by Mitchell
More like 9 interconnected character sketches of people all over the world-- and not all are human. Some of the connections felt really forced. Entertaining in a I-wonder-how-that-person's-life-is-connected-to-that-one-and-in-how-many-degrees sort of way.
The so-called interconnection between the characters are as simple as the way of meeting someone related to other characters in a restaurant in Hong Kong or a teashack in Holy mountain. And these connections mean very little in the whole story that the stories can go on without them. It is really below my expectation.
Loved this. Lots and lots. Definitely a book I will purchase, read again and again and share with friends. David Mitchell, I hate you for having so much talent at such a young age. thank you for writing.
David Mitchell is a find! I liked this even better than the Cloud Atlas.
A remarkable book that includes 9 first person narratives that are all connected. The connections are not always immediately clear, but finding the connections is only one small part of the pleasure of reading this book. Hard to believe this is a first book, the writing is so good and the style between chapters so variable. Usually books with a gimmick like this are disappointing, this book is certainly not as it travels across the world and across time. I am looking forward to more books by David Mitchell.
