Opinion

From Library Staff

George R. R. Martin writes epic fantasy with substantial characters, political intrigue and violence, with plenty of surprises. "A Game of Thrones" is the first book in his best-known series. I can definitely understand the popularity of the Game of Thrones series.

The first book in the series, which I'm almost finished reading, is fantastic. It's totally engrossing and has satisfyingly realistic characters. Even Ned Stark, one of the "good guys" in the book, is naive and places almost too much stock on honour. He's blinded by the way he thinks people should be, rather than seeing how they really are. He's a good man but not without his faults.

There are also great story lines, and the world Martin has imagined is so detailed and rich, it seems real.

I was skeptical of the books. I've watched the entire series, and though I like it a lot, the violence and sex/nudity is overwhelming. The book has some violence, yes, but it's not nearly as violent as I expected (at least when comparing to the show). There's not enough violence in the book to turn me off from reading it. I have heard it gets worse as the series goes on, but the first book in the series is not so bad in this regard.

If I'm being nit-picky, the only thing I noticed when reading the book is that, while the writing is very good, Martins sometimes uses the same descriptions or word choice within only a few pages. There's a lot of "she pulled the furs to her chin" and "black as sin" phrases.

Nonetheless, I'm loving the series so far and I can't wait to read more!

wow.
i am NOT a fantasy person...
didn't get into any of that wizards/kings/dragons/magicks etc... stuff, at any time in my life.

there's a lot about wenches and Lords, incest and piercing blue eyes, whores and mead and gluttonous men... lots of the cliches that make me avoid fantasy in the first place.

But this book is amazing. totally absorbing. excellent pacing and plot lines. everything kinda sucks and all the characters are complicated and tormented and conflicted, or filled with foreshadow-y hubris.

and so far it seems to have some strong female characters, which is always nice in a male-dominated genre.

Really enjoyed it and will be reading the rest in the series. Didn't think I would like this genre at all so I am pleasantly surprised.

The sheer intricacy of the plot of this series blows me away. It has everything I want in fantasy - political intrigue, action, prophecy, magic, high stakes and great characters. Read it and become obsessed!

PLEASE GET MORE COPIES!!! EVEN A DIGITAL VERSION, PLEASE!!

Ned Stark is the world's worst detective.

However, this is a perennial good read.

This is the best book I have ever read! It is way better than the HBO TV show by the same name. George R.R. Martin kept me engaged with the story, always wanting to know what was going to happen next. He makes you feel like you are not just a reader, but are a part of the world of Westeros. It is a long read for sure, but it is definitely worth it.

If you enjoy carnage at every turn and have some time on your hands, this is the book for you. Although the television program is not always faithful to the book series, this is a must read for those awaiting the upcoming television series return. Don't become too attached to a character, however. Martin has a habit of not playing favorites when it comes to killing off people!
