Derek Fallon does not enjoy reading and feels less than successful at school. He anticipates trouble with a summer reading assignment and is reluctant to attend “Learning Camp” when it is suggested by his parents, an illustrator and a vet.. Derek has kept a collection of illustrated vocabulary words, doodles he uses to help him remember definitions and spelling. During this summer before eighth grade Derek makes these word-pictures into a flip book, demonstrating to himself that he might have talent similar to his dad’s and might enjoy learning animation. Bodi, Derek’s dog, is an important part of his life and events of this summer will show him that Bodi played a key role in his toddler years, too. My Life as a Book is illustrated with Derek’s doodles and includes a mystery and the story of developing friendships.
A great book.
