The basic story plot is excellent. The idea of a city divided into five groups each focusing on one virtue is quite unique. Each character is developed pretty well and the ideas are interesting. And it's very different from the Hunger Games in several ways.

But it's not my cup of tea. The violence, the over-doing with the romance, and other things leave a sour taste in my mouth. Yes, I love Tris, Four, Christiana, and some of the better characters and the idea of working together to build a better society but some things mentioned are better left alone and not said.

Divergent is a must read! Each page brings you somewhere new that keeps you reading until the end.

I accidentally read the whole book in one sitting. Such a good read.

In the novel Divergent by Veronica Roth, sixteen year-old Tris Prior lives in a futuristic dystopia, in which society is divided in to five factions- Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. At the age of sixteen, each teenager must choose whether to remain in their birth faction, or transfer to another in which they will remain for the rest of their lives. When the time comes for Tris to choose her faction, she makes a surprising choice, which sends her through to the initiation process, in which she must participate in highly competitive physical and psychological tests that will determine whether she will remain in her chosen faction, while also trying to maintain friendships, and cope with an unexpected love-interest. All the while, Tris struggles to hide a dark secret, that she is Divergent, which means that she can’t be categorized in to only one faction. But when she discovers that one of the factions is planning to destroy all of the Divergents, Tris must work to stop them, before they tear their society apart.

Divergent was definitely an entertaining book. The idea of the factions was definitely intriguing, because who doesn’t love a unique dystopian society? There was also a lot of action, and conflict, which kept me on the edge of my seat, not to mention the drama and romance that also kept me reading. One of the best parts of this story though, is the main character. Tris is not your conventional female heroine. She’s innocent and awkward, but she’s also selfish, and manipulative and cold. Throughout the story, readers get to witness her development as a person, how she toughens up and learns to take risks and to be brave. I also loved the tension between her and the other initiates, the discrimination she feels because of her birth-faction, as well as how angry she is with her family and with everyone. Tris was my favourite part of this book, because she wasn’t perfect like most female heroines are made out to be, and that made her real. I also loved Veronica Roth’s style, how she made you face the true horrors of the initiation process, and how she wasn’t afraid to add a bit of gore and ruthlessness.

Overall, while Divergent isn’t a perfect book, it was definitely worth reading. It was action-packed and unique and I definitely enjoyed it.

Best book I have ever read! Could not put it down! Read it in literally 1 day. Roth did amazing! I have also read the rest of the series and they are all just as good!

Amazing book!
The beginning is very interesting on how it explains all the five factions and then there's "Divergent". emotions and reactions are so well explained. Read the book if you like action.

No words can describe divergent like the actual book so go read it now!

A 16 year old girl named Beatrice who soon changes her name to Tris lives in the fraction Abnegation but thinks she is not selfless enough to be there. So she decides to go to Dauntless. But before she went there her test to see what group she belongs to goes haywire and gives her 3 instead of one test results. Meaning she is Divergent. But she doesn't really know what it means. All she knows is it is not safe to be one. so she has to keep it a secret and long as she can.

Summaries below are accurate- The book is a dystopian, and therefore overhyped, just like Hunger Games. This book is horrible.

In this dystopian society, in the future Chicago, those that reach the age of 16 are forced to pick their life. They must decide where they belong: Abnegation, Erudite, Candor, Dauntless or Amity. Each faction has a goal. For example, the Abnegation believe that people are too selfish, therefore they show selflessness. Once they turn 16, they take a test to help them decide which faction is best for them. This story follows the life of a teenage girl, Beatrice Prior. When she takes the test, she learn that she is part of a rare group, she is Divergent. This means that she didn't fit into a specific group.
Through this story, it shows Tris' problems, decisions and her survival. Can she survive? Can she keep her divergence a secret? Will those that are hunting her find her?

Beatrice Prior and all other sixteen year olds in the future Chicago must make the most significant decision of their lives. They will decide to be Abnegation, Erudite, Candor, Dauntless, or Amity. To help them with this decision, an aptitude test creates a simulation to find what faction the teenagers belong in. This test shows that Beatrice does not just show traits of one faction, but instead shows three. This makes her Divergent.
This novel shows Tris's struggle to survive in a world that wants to kill her and every other Divergent. Divergents are hunted down and killed by the will of a certain one faction that has a plan to control the others. The only flaw in their control are the Divergents, who "cannot be controlled". Tris must save not only herself, but friends and family from their impeding deaths.

It was a good book. Kept me wanting to read more. Can't wait for the rest of the movies to come out.

This is the first book in the "Divergent" series. Beatrice Prior lives in a dystopian future Chicago where society is divided into 5 different factions based on the results of an aptitude test. This test is taken by every member of the city at age 16. The next day at the Choosing Ceremony, they can pick any faction to spend the rest of their life with, regardless of the test results. Beatrice Prior gets 3 results, which makes her Divergent. Abnegation, which she was born into because both her parents were Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless. She picks Dauntless at the ceremony. Read the book to find out what happens next ;)

Violence: Slight violence may be overwhelming for younger crowds

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Peter stabbing Eward's eye, Simulations, Tris getting hurt over and over again, Tris almost get killed by the people she loves the most. But is also sad because Four doesn't know Tris in the end and tries to hurt her, she witnesses her moms death, and she has to kill one of her best friends.

Violence: Yes, of course Divergent would have violence. It's like The Hunger Games that way. For example, getting stab in the eye with a butterknife, fighting each other as a test, and being under simulation and killing off all the people of one faction. That's alot already.
