I agree with the two comments above. This book showed me that there is no such thing as normal. The second thing that hit me really hard is the sibling physical and mental (emtional, too) abuse. It showed me how the abuse can affect not only the receiver, but also the person who's giving the abuse. It can change someone's inner self and turn them for the worse. What I want to say is that this book has helped me and showed me something new.

Whoa. I'm not sure why this book struck me so hard. It was incredibly written for sure, but I've been think about it for a while. I've only encountered a few books that forced me to think like this, The Grapes of Wrath, Genesis (the strange teen book that came out a few years back... a little like Planet of the Apes crossed with the Twilight Zone), and a few more. I'm not sure if it was as good as I thought it was, or what I was supposed to interpret. Maybe that's why. It's not really a light read, possibly a bit disturbing, but very good if your not looking for a shallow read. A dark look on mental illness, stereotypes, and what we build ourselves up to be.

"That's not normal - not speaking and showing your emotions." "What is normal?"

"There is no normal. Normal is what we decipher for ourselves things that are not what we think it is. Therefore there is no such thing as normal."
