This was a good book. I'm glad they introduced another Animus, and he does some pretty cool stuff with that power. Also, I think the word "Animus" is a Latin word, meaning "Soul". Due to the "us" at the end, it is in the male case. So Turtle would be and Animus, and Anemone would technically be an Anima, and the plural of both would be Animi (An-im-i). I think. Or maybe, dragons with Animus powers are still referred to as just an Animus, and the actual power is call Anima. Another theory is that the power of an Animus uses the soul as fuel.

Talons of Power is about Turtle, an animus SeaWing tasked with saving his school from an evil ancient animus dragon, Darkstalker. Only, Darkstalker seems to be acting perfectly normal without any evil intentions at all? Most of the story solely revolves around Turtle monitoring Darkstalker’s movements, but he never, well, tries anything beyond simply observing. I enjoyed the comedy in this book, but ultimately I would have been more interested in seeing some interactions between Darkstalker and Turtle, as they were both animuses yet had so different beliefs on how they should use their powers. I think most of the story felt like filler due to the lack of interaction between the two main characters. The ending of the book felt very solid though, with a lot more action and suspense than the rest of the book. 3/5, would recommend if you’re willing to stick through the slow parts for the final events in the story which become both suspenseful and are important for understanding what occurs in the next book.

The start was boring but towards the end Darkstalker really becomes interesting.

I loved this book! It has a bit of a slow start but really pipes up toward the end. Its the first book with the main character as an animus!
Definitely read this book but not before you read the books before it. :)

Even though it's not my favorite out of the books, I still enjoyed re-reading this. Of course, I enjoy reading most books, but anyone who's a book nut gets it. I have to give this one a three star review (Sorry!) because Turtle honestly just wasn't a good character for this. And Anemone, her character was a little to bossy for my taste. At the end though, Anemone and Tamarin! So cute! I love LGBT ships, and am lesbian myself. I can't help but think that this could have gone better. Also, poor Kinkajou! First she misses out on all the fun, and when she does get to go on a mission, she gets hurt! Then, when she wakes up, she gets a love spell on her and is insignificant to Darkstalker! In the end, she saves the day (Oops, sorry 'bout the spoiler from book ten, if you haven't read it yet) but isn't given the credit! On top of all that, she doesn't even have her own book! I'm going to write exactly 1000 characters, and I'm almost there. I'm currently at 969. And, I'm at one-thousand! Bye!

Amazing book! It is very clever how Tui twists the expected storyline you would find in any other series. It is one of the only book series I positively enjoy reading! I read a lot of books so I often find myself guessing what will happen next and it ruins the book. But this is written in a whole new way, making it the best series I know!

"All right. You're not a dragon who likes compliments, I see. So I'll be blunt. I don't want to begin my reign as king of the NightWings by killing one of my subjects, especially one who could be such a valuable asset in rebuilding our tribe. Given the utter failure of all her schemes so far, and her relation to Starflight, my proposal is this: grant her your mercy and give her to me. Tomorrow I'll take her to the Night Kingdom with me, where she'll have no reason to bother you anymore. She can be my problem instead."

Prince Turtle the SeaWing is a secret animus. He's been hiding this secret from everyone, even his own mother and sisters, his whole life. He doesn't want anyone to find out, because maybe then they'll use him as a weapon. He finally told his winglet (Moon, Winter, Peril, and Qibli) that he is an animus. They agreed to not tell anyone about it. But when the most feared dragon in Pyrrhia, Darkstalker, suddenly erupts out of the ground (where he's apparently been buried for the last two thousand years), he charms everyone he meets into thinking that he's perfectly nice, not like all the stories. Turtle, being an animus, knows that something is wrong, however. He knows that Darkstalker, who is also an animus, must have put a spell on everyone that makes them all like him. He needs to stop him, so he enchants a stick to hide him from Darkstalker, making him the only one who can spy on him. But he ends up following Darkstalker all the way across Pyrrhia. Turtle, the most shy, background-sticking dragon in the world, is out on a mission to stop the most powerful and dangerous dragon of all.
