This is a charming TRUE story, written at the level of young children w/o talking down to them. Both the author and illustrator engage the reader's (adults also) interest. Even the illustrator, Ted Rand, has done thorough research and presented accurate pictures of people's clothing, trains, everyday articles of life in 1914, and even the actual reproduction of postage stamps for that year.
