I don't remember which other Venus Diamond mystery I read, but after Habitat I think I'll give the rest a pass. It's supposed to be funny, and some of it is--her rich mother's name is Belle Winsome-Diamond. Venus has promised her new husband not to work for a year, but she's depressed, and he goes off to the Ivory Coast w/o her. Her former boss asks her help in solving an arson fire in a Seattle nightclub, which kills the majority of the world's experts in cloning of endangered species. Both Venus and her former boss were very fond of Hannah, the head of Breedhaven, a secretive enclave on Helix Island, in Puget Sound, where the experiments are taking place; Hannah died in the fire. Venus works to find out what really happened and why. After the fire, many animals at Breedhaven are killed, many people connected with it are killed, and Venus is next on the list. It didn't take me long to figure out who the many bad guys are. I don't like knowing whodunit before the middle of the book. There are also some factual errors. Not that I know details about cloning or embryonic research, but I do know Seattle, Puget Sound, and the Washington Ferry System. The cover says Moody grew up in Seattle, but she didn't do sufficient local research before writing this 1999 book.
