Supremely talented character actor Sir Ian McKellen plays one of Shakespeare's most iconic villains as a perversely charismatic monster full of both intelligent ambition and ruthless cruelty. The juxtaposition between the fascist imagery and the hedonistic life of early 20th century British high society is heavy handed, but it still works well. Richard III has a great number of people to either shove aside or outright have killed to get to the throne, and the aristocrats who think of themselves as living on a higher moral plane than the common folk get a rather rude awakening.

Although the frank sexuality and constant violence mean that this isn't for everyone, the film remains one of the best movie adaptations of Shakespeare's work. This version of Richard III has much in common with the likes of Hannibal Lecter and other predatory film icons. He immediately pulls one in while still being utterly devious, making this absolutely worth watching.

The character of Richard 3rd is played very well, but the adaptation is marred by the oddities of a melange of caricatures of 1930's Europe.
