I missed this show during its initial run on HBO in the early 00s, shortly after "The Sopranos" inaugurated the so-called Golden Era of TV. Created by Alan Ball, hot off his Oscar win for writing the execrable "American Beauty," "Six Feet Under" scored points by the novelty of its setting (Funeral home) and its large, talented cast, especially Michael C. Hall, as the high-strung, intense, only half out of the closet son running the business after his father (Richard Jenkins, who shows up as a ghost.) dies in a freak accident. The show has a lot of good moments but lacks much of a narrative arc and, like Ball's script for "American Beauty," it can't quite find the balance between melodrama, dark comedy, and domestic chaos. It ran for four more seasons.

This is an excellent series for seasons 1&2. After that the dark humor is definitely toned down and, while still interesting, lost a lot of appeal for me. Season 3, 4 and 5 are full of screaming and bitterness as well as the inability to lose the character of Lisa, who seems to glom on like a bad penny. I'd suggest either stopping after season 2 or going straight to season 5, episode 10 and finishing out the series.

One of my all-time favorite series! Kind of creepy, kind of endearing, very entertaining, and very emotional! This is the perfect series to binge-watch on a rainy day with a cup of tea.

This is one of the best series I have watched. It is about a family that operates a funeral home. And what a strange quirky family it is! They are all thrown for a loop when the patriarch of the family dies suddenly - thus thrusting them into struggles with a new family dynamic. The series is moving, sometimes funny, and utterly engaging. Highly recommended for adults.

Overuse of the "f" word, many, many times in the first 20 minutes. Kept wanting to continue watching it but couldn't stand the language. So disgusting. Would have been fine without it (the "f" word). Bad language just shows lack of intelligence.

An excellent show. For those who like dark drama. The cast is amazing, and the scripts are very original and well written.

Loved this show so much when it came out! I have started to watch it for the second time, and it still holds up quite well!

Recently I "discovered" this show while exploring at Half-Price Books. I enjoy the story line very much: Average business-owner family struggling to get by in the funeral industry after the death of the family patriarch, and the fellow playing the corporate drone from the funeral home corporation is...creepy. The characters are rich and complex, especially Brenda, and I like this refreshing look at a gay relationship between David and Keith. Looking forward to seeing future seasons.

My brother-in-law works at a funeral home so I was hoping he might enjoy this, but he is intelligent, so the overuse of slang (the "f" word) would prevent him from being interested. This movie is only for those of low intelligence as they do not know how to speak without using horrific slang, which is why I could not continue watching it.

as the series continues it amazes me how the stories unfold of the lives of the "Funeral Directors" and their families.
Shocking at time, poignant and real to life, this series is amazing in all aspects, but especially from the world of funerals point of view.
Beware: it is quite shocking & graphic at times.
