It feels like a crime that I only discovered Noel Streatfeild's books as an adult, because I would have loved these so, so, so much as a kid. Ballet Shoes is her most famous, and it is an unqualified delight: charming, old-fashioned, funny, and very, very, very English -- which is pretty much the highest compliment I can pay any book.

When I was nine, I went to a thrift store with my aunt. She found Ballet Shoes on the children's shelf, shocked that I hadn't read it, and insisted on buying it for me. Despite the 1930s language, I immediately fell in love with the characters, setting and premise. I devoured it then, and have reread it multiple times since. Having just finished it at fourteen, it has yet to lose its charm. Delightfully old-fashioned as they are, Pauline, Petrova and Posy have been some of my favourite fictional friends. I recommend this book to girls of any age.

I absolutely love this book! I have read all of the Noel Streatfeild books I can get my hands on, and Ballet Shoes is one of my top favorites. I love the time period, and the way Streatfeild makes you feel personally connected to each character. If you enjoy this book, you may consider reading Thursday's Child (my personal favorite), also written by Streatfeild.

I don't know how I missed this book as a child, but I'm reading it with my 8-year-old and we love it. Very British and wonderful.

This is my very favorite book. I checked it out 24 weeks in a row when I was in third grade. I re-read it from time to time (I am now 64). It creates wonderful, vivid images of life in London between the war. Also, the female characters are strong and independent, which was not something I encountered in most books I read as a child. I think the character Petrova greatly influenced me to pursue a career in law, which was not traditional for women when I graduated from college (she loves all things mechanical, such as auto repair). This is the best of the "Shoes" series by Noel Streatfield.

This book portrays a very realistic assessment of what it is like in the film and theater world, and it's great for kids and adults alike! =^.^=
