The first couple pages can be a drag, but once you get past them it's a page turning novel!

A good book for when you simply wish to turn off your brain and enjoy a fast paced yet entertaining read. Though the writing can be a bit choppy at times, with exposition handled in a showcase fashion, the premise and plot are entertaining enough to overlook the book's seemingly lazy oversight of the "show-don't-tell" method. My only true issues are the characters, but it's mostly due to personal preference. I typically shy away from or completely despise the "lone female in a friend group" characters trope, as it is commonly used as an excuse for two women in the same book to be catty to each other, and more often then not, lead to slut shaming. I fear that the epilogue to City of Bones does not make up for over 300 pages of our main protagonist hating on the only other girl in the book simply because she's "hotter and knows it". But this is the first book in the series, so my hope is that this does not continue into the others, or if it does, it's addresses and is dealt with more naturally and tastefully then throwing in the "I'm sorry I was a bitch to you, but I've never met another female my age in my life, so I needed act like a hostile gorilla to you!" excuse.

Pretty good book in general. Lots of plot twists. Its also really funny, and slightly romantic. There will be some language in this book. I recommend this book to anyone that likes a bunch of genres mended into one book!

I didn't enjoy this book... It had some good ideas but was poorly executed. Slow pace and boring characters.

Read City of Bones then went on to read every book in the 3 series as well as the books not in a delegated series. Enjoyed them all and couldn’t wait to get to the next book until the very last book, 2018.
Renewed it over and over and no matter what, could NOT get through it.
I kept a record of my page and will try again later. Somehow C. Clare has lost her touch.

Not all that it's hyped up to be.

Jace was really annoying. Not only was he the stereotypical gorgeous boy character, he was also licentious, selfish, and cruel. I'm not going to pity him because of his oh-so-sad past. He's still a bad person.

Clary was okay. She was an average heroine, although I felt like she needed to be more intellectual and nicer to Simon. She also shouldn't have fallen in love with a guy who both used and was cruel to her, and ended up being her brother too. INCEST ALERT!

Simon was amazing. He was the best part of the book. Not only was he smart, funny, and brave, he was also very caring.

Isabelle was better than Jace because she had more personality. I liked how she was reconciled to Clary at the end of the book.

Alec was… stupid. I absolutely hate it when authors make characters gay, and Alec was no exception. He would have been okay if not for all the horrible references and situations.

Luke was my second favourite character after Simon. He obviously cared a lot for Clary and would die for her and her mother.

The plot was okay, but kind of boring. There was a lot of romance and a lot of plot twists they obviously wanted you to find exciting and surprising, but… YAWN. One thing I really liked were the odd bits of humour and wittiness thrown in. I laughed my head off at some of them. But I really hated all the taking the Lord's name in vain. It was very annoying. I'd have to say, Cassandra Clare could be a great author, but she let some things get in her way. I like her writing style. I also liked the premise. I wish this was better. It wasn't. Read this one and don't waste your time on the rest of the series.

This is soooooo boring. They swear too much and nothing really happens in the first book. It is a waste of your time. Read something else instead. Btw this first book is mostly romance. It doesn't have a lot action at all

This book is awesome. Many people consider it a bit boring and such, but to be honest, the real action and fighting and plot gets started in around the second book and gets better and better from there!! I’d just recommend to keep reading and put up with some long explanations. Since it takes place in a “different world”, the author has to explain everything well in order for the book to make sense. She does an amazing job, making sure it’s not too long and are placed in appropriate places. It does have some comedy, but not enough to be placed in that genre. Some great action and plot. I love the storyline, and the barely noticeable hints are only noted by those who read it thoroughly. A bit of romance as well, and the books really makes you want to scream in frustration sometimes, but it does work out pretty well in the end. I, for one, am definitely happy with the ending, despite a few sad incidences, and am so glad I chose to read this book!!

Clary: So what's with that 'hey' thing?
Simon: What 'hey' thing?
Clary: The 'hey' thing that guys always do. Like when you saw Jace and Alec, you said 'hey,' and they said 'hey' back. What's wrong with 'hello'?
Simon: 'Hello' is girly. Real men are terse. Laconic.
Clary: So the more manly you are, the less you say?
Simon: Right. That's why when major badasses greet each other in movies, they don't say anything, they just nod. The nod means, 'I am a badass, and I recognize that you, too, are a badass,' but they don't say anything because they're Wolverine and Magneto and it would mess up their vibe to explain.
Jace: I have no idea what you're talking about.
Clary: Good.

When clary enters the pandemonium club she hardly expects to witness a murder, especially one that only she seems to be able to see. Beginning with that night Clary gets plunged in to a hidden world of shadow hunters and downworlders. Starting with the disappearance of her mom and moving to the even more extreme, this book will leave you dying to read the whole series!

This is one of my favourite books. I love the characters, particularly Clary and Jace. The way Cassie Clare writes is wonderful, it is beautifully descriptive and witty. I fell in love with Jace in this book, and he remains my favourite male character. I also love Clary, she is 'one of us'.

The back:
Their hidden world is about to be revealed...
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder--much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it's hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary.
Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary's mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon.
But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know....

lms Mar 22, 2008

Through meeting Jace, Alec and Isabelle - teenaged defenders of demonic evil on earth - Clary becomes embroiled in a world class struggle of good and evil and realizes that she may have superhero traits of her own.
