This is a 74-minute documentary film released in 2000, directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, and narrated by Rupert Everett.
What is Paragraph 175?
An unnatural sex act committed between persons of the male sex or
by humans with animals is punishable by imprisonment;
the loss of civil rights may also be imposed.
(German Penal Code, 1871)
This epic story is told through personal accounts of men and women who lived through the difficult times.
One is a Jewish gay resistance fighter who poses as a Hitler Youth member to rescue his lover from a Gestapo transfer camp.
Another is a Jewish lesbian who escaped to England with the help of an older woman she had a crush on.
Yet another is Heinz Dormer who was repeatedly re-arrested under Paragraph 175 in the 1950s and 60s.
He tried and failed to receive reparations.
East German's version of Paragraph175 remained in effect until 1968.
West germany retained the Nazi law until 1969.
After the war, all those persecuted by the Nazis under Paragraph 175 were classified as criminals.
At century's end, not one has received legal recognition as a victim of the Nazi regime.
It is an amazing film!
