Speed Racer is a young man (yes, Speed is part of his name, oddly enough) who loves racing. His brother, Rex Racer, died in The Crucible (which is a racing rally), and now Speed wants to win this rally. Royalton industries, a car company, gives Speed an offer which he rejects, much to the owner’s dismay. Speed drives the car his dad designed, the Mach 5. He uncovers that Royalton industries has been fixing races, and now the company is out to get Speed and his Mach 5. The movie is not too interesting and seems very much for little kids as it is very simple.

More like "No Speed racer!" Amiright? Like the second "Star Wars" trilogy, pretty much everything but the actors looks like it was computer generated. Made by the creators of "The Matrix," "Speed Racer" is both visually striking and headache inducing. If you've wanted to see a movie that looked like a video game or a cartoon come to life, this is for you. Some of us older viewers might be a little woozy. The story, which involves a lot of racing, is inconsequential. A fine cast is mostly overshadowed by the copious CGI. British actor Roger Allam rises above by embracing the sardonic evil of his role (and seemingly channeling Christopher Hitchens). Matthew Fox is the mysterious (and boring) Racer X. It's not a good movie really, but it will keep you entertained if it doesn't burn out your retinas first.

This movie, considered not only a box-office bomb but a stain on the film maker's reputations, is obviously a labor of love. This movie would be the equivalent of Maurice to Room with a View. Film makers often follow up great financial success and breakout status with a project that is near and dear to their hearts because they suddenly have a world of YES. Is the movie sometimes obvious and simplistic? Are some of the performances lacking depth or much nuance? Yes and yes. But it is based on an Americanized version of a 1960's Japanese cartoon. If they'd made a gritty, dark and foreboding version of Speed Racer I doubt it would have fared any better. This movie addresses both the strengths and the weaknesses of The Wachowskis - both their desire to entertain at nearly any cost and their willingness to descend into sometimes simplistic plotting and characterization to evoke a mood - all the while trying to give their work a kind of sweep most don't even attempt to achieve. I personally love the film, but I'm the demo they were looking for, some kid who raced home every day to watch Speed Racer.

Speed Racer fans will love it! I must confess to being a huge fan. When I was 7 I would literally run home from school to watch the cartoon. I would say it is probably 2 stars for non fans. This movie made me feel like I was 7 again, so big points for capturing that feeling. The casting was perfect and they managed to tell a reasonable story while incorporating the feel of the cartoon. I love the anti-corporate spin with the little guys taking on the giant bad guys. The graphics were a bit over the top, but that makes sense since it is a cartoon.

In spite of being flawed by its weak & clumsy "Wachowski"-style directorial blunders (Was Speed Racer really just a hasty re-tooling of The Matrix?), this Action Film certainly did deliver an adrenaline-rush when it came to the sheer extravagance of its high-powered, pop art, CG visuals._____ But regardless of its impressive, rapid-fire editing, its wild and imaginative camerawork, and its vividly bold, rainbow-colored imagery (which was a really delightful feast for the eyes), Speed Racer's story unfortunately did not hold up well, at all, for the ultimate test - A second viewing. No, it didn't._____ As I disappointedly found out the second time around, Speed Racer only came to life during the dazzling scenes on the racetrack. And that was it. The rest of this needlessly overlong film was just a flat and uninspired pile of family-oriented nonsense.______ And so, I ask you - At this point in my review, how can I possibly be expected to heap a load of praise on a film whose most interesting and charming character was that of a mischievous, hyper-active, little chimpanzee named Chim-Chim who deserved a helluva lot more screen-time than he got?

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”

This wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, it is far from being good. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”

This film seems to get too much of a bad rap.

I think it has an excellent message, it's fun and it is cleverly true to the cartoon, even in the way John Goodman winks his eye and exhibits Pops other cartoonish quirks. Matthew Fox was also well-cast as Racer X.

It's not "The Matrix" and it should be applauded for that.

The W. Siblings went in a different direction but they didn't sacrifice substance with all their style.

I LIKE this film.

Marcell here!
Though this movie was made for 3-D Purposes and extremely colorful. I give it a 4.5/5, for it's plot-though a little predictable, and the special effects, though that was the most colorful. I have to say it was better than what I expected, but because I watched it when coming up as a child-by the time the movie was over it had me saying "GO SPEED RACER, GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Pops Racer: You think you can drive a car and change the world? It doesn't work like that!
Speed: Maybe not, but it's the only thing I know how to do and I gotta do something.

Speed Racer is the youngest driver in the WRL (World Racing League), and his ultimate goal is to be the best driver in the world. When he was younger, he watched his older brother, Rex after leaving home, compete in the Casa Cristo Cross Country Rally. Rex did not survive that race. Now, James "Speed" Racer is participating in that very same cross country race and is determined to win where his brother did not. All was not lost though, because unbeknownst to the Racer family, Rex did not die, but he did change his looks and assumed the identity of the masked Racer X. X watches over Speed when he competes in various races around the world
