It has English dubbing (...which almost matches up with the English sub-titles). Set during the Seven Year's War, this is a kind of an early prototype of today's 'action' movies,.. but with French panache, and a dollop of anti-war sarcasm. In beautiful B&W.

Get past the truly dorky cover and find a fun precursor to the modern Three Musketeers movies. Yes, it's dated, but so what? It's Gerard Philipe's breakout role...he goes on to become one of France's most beloved actors. The first section is a bit squirmy because it's dated. But Gerard does all his own stunts and by the end, you'll be happy you did. The French king is a modern abuser and Fan Fan realizes true love. OK, how can he not? It's a young Gina Lollobrigida and she is sexy, but it's 1957 sexy and you can understand her appeal.
I also recommend the commentary on Gerard Philipe that is part of the DVD. I liked it almost better than the movie, as it told me so much about him and the French cinema of the time.
