This low rating is not a reflection of the story line but rather the quality of the film itself.
This new "remastered" transfer is terrible. Sound is awful, contrast too dark, I couldn't see 25% of the film on screen. Lots of pops and crackles in dialogue. I had to stop watching after 25 minutes out of frustration.

This is a 1937 British crime thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the 1936 novel "A Shilling for Candles" by Josephine Tey.
There were significant changes made in adapting the book for the film.
The team of screenwriters took the main suspect of the novel, Robert Tisdall, and his unexpected supporter, Erica Burgoyne, and left out all the other characters, including Tey's Inspector Alan Grant and even the original murderer, who is not the same character as in the film.
In other words, the film focuses on Tisdall as a fugitive from justice, omitting the subplots and distractions of Tey's novel.
After all, this film lacks a whodunit.
Therefore, it ends up with a silly confession of a drummer-murderer with twitching eyes.

Alfred Hitchcock in this 1937 classic is up to his usual tricks. He mixes suspense and humor together. We have a film without stars we are familiar with in Nova Pilbeam, Derrick De Marney and Percy Marmont. Hard to believe a movie had so many actors with such unusual names. No matter, they perform admirably and the movie is a winner. I am sure you will not be surprised that "Young and Innocent" is a murder mystery. This is one of his earliest classics and one that you may have missed. I hope you enjoy the film!

this was a good thriller. the copy of the DVD I received from CPL was very dark and some of the images were hard to see. I thought the ending was abrupt. this movie showed a side of the spy world we don't usually see in movies. I also wondered if Hitchcock had a cameo as he did in his later movies. I did not see him but there were crowd scenes he could have put himself in.
