The Lion and the Mouse only has a few words, but the warm and bright watercolors upon pencil drawings accentuated the mouse and lion's expressions of fear, happiness and anger. This book also enables children to become active readers. The adult reader can assess a child's understanding of the few text ( jungle sounds) placed strategically in the story.

Amazing illustrations! Not surprising it won an award for them. Didn't need words in this beautifully retold story!

This is an absolutely stunning, wordless picture book. Pinkney retells Aesop's fable of the mouse remembering a debt to the lion. Words are used only as part of the background animal noises within watercolour paintings that show the teeming life of the Serengeti. Ages 3 - 7.
