Explores the mind and motivations of Pablo Picasso as he creates over fifteen works before the camera. Using a specially designed transparent 'canvas' to provide an unobstructed view, Picasso creates as the camera records. He begins with simple works that take shape after only a single brush stroke. He then progresses to more complex paintings, in which he repeatedly adds and removes elements, transforming the entire scene, until at last the work is complete.

Every artist needs to see this film. Picasso does 20 works for the camera, ranging from sketches to oil paintings. Some appear to be done in real time, others in time lapse, but you get to watch him make decisions, experiment, change his mind, start over, re-work, refine and even fail. Note: the Georges Auric score is pretty overbearing -- I would recommend watching it with the art expert's commentary turned on. It gives useful context for each work.

Perhaps one of the greatest films about art because it shows the creation of art. French director Henri-Georges Clouzot, who made the classic thrillers "Diabolique" and "The Wages of Fear," shows Picasso at work with minimal interference. You see the men interact briefly and it is cool to see two masters of their craft together. Picasso was in his 70s at the time. This DVD includes a short film by another great French director, Alain Resnais ("Hiroshima Mon Amour") about Guernica. Released in 1956.
