A magnificently atmospheric horror story with grand B&W cinematography that toys with our childhood fears of shadowy corners and deep dark woods whether it be an unseen bogeyman at the end of a hallway or a pair of demonic footprints chasing us through a moonlit forest. Director Jacques Tourneur knows just when to pile on the chills and when to let our own imaginations take over—a children’s party turns diabolical, a sunny country estate takes on haunted airs, and a pair of passing trains seem to open up the gates of Hell itself. The stuff of nightmares, and a lot of fun too. Who knew Satan could be so cuddly?!

A film that combines elements of noir, of which Tourneur was an early contributor, with techniques he had honed while directing some of Val Lewton's best films. Pre neo-realist horror films (so basically before the late 60's) worked best as uneasy fables or fairy tales and that's the best way to enjoy a film like this. The UK locations have probably never looked more photogenic and Niall MacGinnis' scene stealing segments as Karswell, leader of a secret group of devil worshippers, anticipates generations of Bond Villains. The US cut 'Night of the Demon' (included) runs a little smoother but denies an extra scene with Karswell from the UK cut 'Curse of the Demon' (also included).

" Night of the Demon " is a good horror movie based on M.R. James- " Casting the Runes ". Directed by Jacques Tourneur.

One of my favourite pre-slasher horror movies with a well-written script and good acting. The special effects were also very good for the 1950s. Fans of blood and guts films of today should not watch this.

Connecting the demon cult to Stonehenge,
a real but mysterious structure as old as the Pyramids,
makes the tale seem more plausible.

A very chilling and intelligent horror film that broke free of most of the 1950's fare. The horror is low key, yet you are shown at the beginning that the horror is real. This is considered a classic horror film, look around the Internet, read the reviews at Amazon. Fans of blood, boobs and sex will be very disappointed in this film.

Silly, preposterous, laughable - Yep. In a nutshell, these 3 words just about sum up this far-from-scary Supernatural Thriller from 1957..... With its absolutely hilarious demon monster-effects and its often overloud soundtrack music, Curse Of The Demon was far too much "yak-yak-yak" for its own good and not enough horrific demon monster presence to satisfy me..... Set in London, this film's hokey story has the sceptical, American psychologist, John Holden flying over to the UK in order to investigate an alleged devil worship cult headed by the sinister Prof. Kraswell..... Holden's arrogant scepticism soon takes a total U-Turn when he locks horns with the bull-headed Kraswell and his "so-called" magical powers...... I found that far too often this film took itself way too seriously. It handed the viewer a pile of asinine bunk about the occult, expecting one to swallow this utter nonsense at face value..... This film did contain a couple of brief scenes at England's famous "Stonehenge" site. And even though, in reality, Stonehenge is a good 80 miles north of London, it was implied that it was just a mere hop, skip, and a jump away from Piccadilly Circus..... Filmed in b&w, I cannot see how this movie could ever be considered a "cult" classic.
