This is not as bad as you might think. Yes, it is a Robert Wilson production (which means it’s ridiculously avant-garde), and yes, Orpheus is a woman that looks like Cruella Deville, BUT, the music is gorgeous. Magdalena Kozena’s voice (Orpheus ) is gorgeous, and is one part of a gorgeous trio…The Three Tenors? …well this is the Three Sopranos. I’ve seen two Robert Wilson productions in NYC, and yes, they are very weird, but they work when you see the whole stage. Wilson is big on a weird 2-D look, where man is small and alienated, which only works if you see it live from the cheap seats. This filming was way too close…they did not have a second camera behind the audience which is a shame. I suggest you play the DVD and listen to the music…it’s beautiful.
