At eighteen, Bitterblue is a Queen with no power who feels confined and smothered by her advisers. Defiantly, the young Queen begins sneaking out of the castle at night in disguise to walk the streets and learn the truth about the thirty five year long spell that entrapped her Kingdom. With the help of two thieves, Bitterblue is determined to move herself and her Kingdom toward a better future.
It has been nine years since Katsa killed King Leck and ended his sociopathic reign, and his daughter, Bitterblue is on the throne. Bitterblue is trying to be a good queen, but it's hard in a kingdom full of secrets. Suspecting her advisers are lying to her, Bitterblue takes to roaming the streets in disguise to find the truth of her kingdom. What she finds is a web of conspiracies, and betrayals that will test her abilities as queen. Can one young woman heal a kingdom that was wounded for 35 years? Can she even come to terms with her own past?
Eighteen-year-old Bitterblue, queen of Monsea, realizes her heavy responsibility and the futility of relying on advisors who surround her with lies as she tries to help her people to heal from the thirty-five-year spell cast by her father, a violent psychopath with mind-altering abilities.
