Set against the backdrop of the July 7th terrorist attacks in 2005, LONDON RIVER follows Elizabeth (BAFTA winner, Academy Award? nominee Brenda Blethyn) from a small farming community in Guernsey as she travels to London in the immediate aftermath of the bombings after failing to hear from her daughter. Elizabeth is disturbed by the confusion of the metropolis and above all, by the predominantly Muslim neighborhood where her daughter lived. Her fear and prejudice escalate when she discovers her daughter was converting to Islam as she keeps crossing paths with Ousmane (Berlin's Silver Bear winner, Sotigui Kouyate), a West African who has come from France to find his missing son. Although they come from very different backgrounds, Elizabeth and Ousmane share the same hope of finding their children alive. Putting aside their cultural differences, they give each other the strength to continue the search and maintain their faith in humanity.

This is an interesting and emotional movie about two people trying to find their children after the terrorist attacks in 2005 in London. Good story with outstanding performance by Brenda Blethyn and Sotigui Kouyate.

I knew nothing about this film and picked it up because of the title only to discover an extraordinary film that touched my inner core as I watched the experienced emotions, portrayed by the actors, of anxiety, fear, elation, and ultimate anguish. Suberb acting by Brenda Blethyn and Sottigui Kouyate perfectly cast in their roles as two very different parents brought together as they are trying to find their missing children after the London bombings of 2005. The reality of this film stays with you.

Blethyn plays a heart broken mother searching for her daughter after a terrorist attack in London. Ousmane is searching for his son as well. Their lives and searches are intertwined much to Blethyn's chagrin. The acting is very well done. I enjoyed the story, which is novel for Canadians, but may not be for others from countries which suffer from acts of terrorism. Eye opening and thought provoking.

The English translated close captions for the French portions were not visible except for the top bits of the letters on our TV. Still it was such an interesting story. We continued fast viewing the French language parts. We were able to keep the gist of the story which was unique, interesting and emotionally compelling.

Very contemporary insight into current events. I didnt find it slow at all; the story needed time to play out. I thought it was well acted - the characters interesting and likable, their stories compelling and complex. Disclaimer: I'm partial to any film with Brenda Blethyn.

I didn’t care for this movie. Very slow and the female main character just didn’t do anything for me. The male main character was just too strange, if you left your child when he was 6, then 15 years later he is all of a sudden important to you?? I don’t know. Give this movie a pass.

The DVD is not accessible to the hearing-impaired or deaf. There are no closed-captions for the English language dialogue; although the French dialogue has English-language sub-titles. If you need closed-captions: email SPL and ask them to purchase this DVD w/ both cc's (for English dialogue) & sub-titles (for the French dialogue), then toss (via Friends of the Library sales) the current copies in the collection after the new ones arrive.

A superbly "understated" film. In a time when so many directors feel they have to toss in a bunch of gratuitous crap (sex, violence, special effects) just to get their work seen, it's nice to see that there are still directors out there who get that it's all about the story. And the people.

Consummate acting, directing, and storytelling all around.

Oh, and there's a message here, too, but the film doesn't hit you over the head with it.

The two main actors (the parents in the film) make this movie. They are both excellent. I watched it on an appropriately rainy day.
