Alike is a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents and younger sister in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. She has a flair for poetry, and is a good student at her local high school. Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity--sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.

This was a really good portrayal of being different, accepting it and coming out to family and friends .Poignant and the dynamics with herself and her friends is one thing , then there is the dynamics of her parents . She is very close to her Dad but her Dad is too busy running away from his marriage and responsibilities . Her Mom is a bomb ready to go off knowing her husband is cheating plus coming to terms with her daughter's sexuality , different than what she considers " normal " . This is a raw, and sometimes quite sad movie but yet worth watching to get a feel of what some can and do go through when they are considered " out of the norm " .

I loved this film for the characters and the grace they show in dealing with difficult issues. The beginning is gritty and intense, but as the plot unfolds the players become more interesting, real, thoughtful and loveable. Highly recommended for mature viewers of any race or orientation. Just hang on past the first scenes.

I think this is my Lesbian movie debut if my memory serves me correctly. This is very slick and even bone chilling for a dike drama. It didn't really annoy me and i could easily watch this again however. It is well made and all of the performances are very good performances ladies and gentlemen. If the majority of Lesbian movies are like this,i just might have a new addiction despite the fact that i am totally against the rainbow flag in real life period.I just hope this very slick film doesn't screw up other straight people period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This film was sensitively done, if a bit painful to watch at times. The mother was a tad too intense, perhaps. It's pretty easy to recognize this as a Spike Lee film. There's just something about the way Lee handles his characters.

Average lesbian romantic drama. This just dragged. Nothing happens. It's well acted and seems very authentic, but I just didn't care. Possibly opens eyes as to what coming out as a lesbian or the day to day life of a young black lesbian is like. Boring.

Tons of accolades to this film. Not as crazily in love with this movie as Newsday critic John Anderson who wrote: The gay coming-of-age story's been done, but "Pariah" has something fresh to say, largely about the knotty complexities of love, and how they might keep someone in the closet: How badly do you need to be free, to hurt the people you love? And in his New York Times article, film critic A.O. Scott wrote that to watch Adepero Oduye play Alike “is to experience the thrill of discovery.” Scott continued by saying that “Pariah has a point to make, and a point of view to argue, but it also, above all, wants to illuminate an individual universe of meaning and emotion.”

Excellent performances and writing make what could have been just another coming out story something special. A very full 90 minutes that is neither rushed nor hard to watch. Highly recommended. Transcends age and race demographics.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS FILM. I LIKED HOW THEY SHOWED EXACTLY HOW AGGRESSIVE LESBIANS LIVE THEIR LIVES AND THE HARDSHIPS THEY Face BECAUSE OF THEIR SEXUALITY. ITS A MUST SEE!!!!

A powerful movie! Sexual identity and race collide in a young teenager's life. I will watch this movie again.
