The animation was very gripping & enticed me to keep watching. I am glad I did. The music is fabulous. It takes us to a Cuba in the 1940's which most of us do not remember. This animated movie will hold the attention of adults. Wow.

Cuba is notorious for being a country with rich music. Because of the location Cuba is in, neighboring countries influenced its music into one of the most popular types of music in the world. The movie Chico & Rita focuses on the romance happening between a very promising piano player and a beautiful singer. Together, they travel across the world because of their love (and hate) with each other and music. The animations make the movie an unforgettable experience with its role in helping the mood shift from scene to scene. The music features the works from many famous jazz artists including five-time Grammy-winning Bebo Valdés who happens to score the soundtrack. The music and romance is not the only focus in the movie however. The film shows what Cuba was like during the Cuban Revolution and how citizens survived by keeping Cuban culture alive. Even in the deepest of poverty, music still endured and was passed on to help create one of the biggest music scenes on a single island. The movie has won countless of awards and has impacted what we see that defines the culture of Cuba.

Effervescent & seductive animated feature...if the somewhat plain & straightforward style of illustration was tailored for universal appeal, at least the result is universally appealing. Watching the credits you realize that artists & musicians all over the world contributed to this beautiful love story. Definitely recommended. CR

The animation is exceptionally good. Ditto the music. I felt that the subject matter holds more promise that what the film delivers. The problem, as others have pointed out, is the story. We get a good sense of the era, the contrast between the cities of Havana and New York, however Chico and Rita are relentlessly moody and somewhat inaccessible characters. In other words, the rendering of the story is better than the story itself.

We liked the story, music and animation of this film. It's probably good that it was made as an animated movie instead of a feature film with actors.

Heart breaking and heart warming story of love and cuban/jazz music set in late 40s - early 50s in the wonderfully detailed cities of Havana and New York. Really shows what good animation is capable of.

Fantastic music, thin story line &, at times, some interesting animation. Don't miss" the making of" extra.

This Spain-Cuba production is an animation film for the grown-up's. In fact, children should not watch it as there are scenes of nudity and sexual suggestions. The quality of animation is great, but the story line a bit thin. If you like jazz music it will be an extra bonus. Well worth my time if just for the visual.
