Fagan reveals human society in its infancy, facing enormous environmental challenges--including a rival species of humans, the Neanderthals.
The name Cro-Magnon inspires images of a snowbound world, mammoth hunting, and eerily alluring cave paintings. Who were these ancient people? In a word, they were us-the first anatomically modern humans.

Repetitive, too many imagined scenes of Neanderthals tip-toeing around to spy on their better-dressed Cro-Magnon neighbours. Listening to the CD version was a chore, reading the book in printed form would be impossible.

Informative, detailed (but not excessively), and imaginative. Reconstructs the lives of human-like creatures (or just humans, broadly understood), from about half a million years ago to about nine thousand years ago, mainly focused on the last hundred thousand years. The author uses archaeo-climatological findings from many areas around the world, and all sorts of archaeological and physical anthropological findings from a wide array of experts, and weaves a narrative cum constructive argument about human prehistory. Just about every chapter has sections where he imagines the daily life of people, but without going overboard: he keeps within the physically definite facts, and then applies historical imagination. At first that seemed cocky of him, now that I've finished listening to it, they are among the best and most insightful parts of the book.
