The Velvet Underground - Venus in Furs

First published in 1870, this tale of the suprasensual Severin's slavish worship of his dominant mistress Wanda helped inspire the term "masochism."

"Pleasure alone makes existence worthwhile." Man those Europeans can be some kinky mofos. This 19th century novel is about a dude who pledges himself to the title character and lets himself be subjected to bondage, whipping and boot licking. . .And he likes it! The word "masochism" comes from the author's last name and The Velvet Underground wrote a song called "Venus in Furs." I don't know if Iggy Pop was familiar with it, but at one point the protagonist Severin says "I want to be your dog!" Come on! Yeah, some sexy, perverse stuff from across the pond.
