"In December 1969, Thelonious Monk entered a television studio in Paris ... The result was an astonishingly intimate and revealing portrait of a man and his music. Monk sits at at the piano and plays whatever occurs to him. In this case, it was nine originals and two of his favorite standards. The freedom of playing unaccompanied allows Monk to give each composition fascinating new twists and variations."--Container.

A treasure!!! In 1965 Thelonius Monk, at the height of his piano-playing powers, was brought into a studio in Paris that contained only a piano and two TV cameras, and was invited to play an hour of piano solo selections of his own choosing. The result is this glorious DVD. Monk starts off tentatively, but gains steam by the third or fourth selection and plays superbly the rest of the way. Among the highlights are his umpteenth performance of Round Midnight, to which he brings an amazing flow of new ideas, and a swinging, stride piano version of Nice Work When You Can get It, which ends the set. As he continues playing, sweat pours down Monk's face and even into his eyes. But his immersion into the music is so complete that he doesn't even raise a finger for relief. Instead he keeps pouring out his beautiful dissonances. The DVD allows you to observe Monk's fingering, or close your eyes and just listen to this incomparable music.
