Irked that intro gave away key plot of what happens on pg 364. Great man read. Sailor Holman works the engine room on an old coal fired US Navy gunboat on the rivers of 1920's China, time when warlords ruled & the US had to tread with care while dealing w/ & protecting missionaries that weren't to keen of the USN presence. Characters come to life with ease in retired USN Richard McKennas ability to tell a great story. Watched the Steve McQueen/Candice Bergman movie after, a lot missing, but still entertaining.
