A sincere thank you to the librarian who decided to purchase this book and put it on the shelves at the Ottawa Public Library.

In Joyride, Mia Birk, with the assistance of Joe Kurmaskie, describes the techniques that she and a posse of dedicated colleagues and volunteers used to rebuild the streets of Portland. Their goal was to accommodate and encourage local cyclists. They spent a lot of grief and energy doing so, but over time, they became so successful that Portland has become a North American leader in safe and sustainable urban transportation practices.

In the narrative, Birk and Kurmaskie also describe Birk's post-Portland adventures as an international consultant on bicycling transportation.

While the writing is occasionally clunky, the subject matter is both empowering to urban travellers and of enormous practical value to the field of urban planning. The authors have worked hard to articulate and disseminate the diverse transformation strategies adopted by Birk and her colleagues. Included in the final pages are the authors' fifty keys for implementing pro-cycling urban landscapes, a transformation guide created by the League of American Bicyclists, and a Q and A with Ms. Birk regarding her recommendations for and insights into the future of urban cycling.

I'm feeling so inspired right now that I might just have to go for a bike ride.
