What a great, great movie- an elegy to the West & the cowboy- this movie is sombre AND funny- with one of the best performances I've seen by Lee Marvin ( and a great all round cast ).

This is a 1970 drama based on a 1963 western novel by Jack Schaefer, but the movie has little to do with the plot of Schaefer's book.
This gripping saga happens during the tumultuous final days of the Old West.
Although the things move slow and somewhat funny in the first half, the second half turns out to be quite serious just as a hard-boiled film noir.
The performances of Lee Marvin and Jeanne Moreau appear quite impressive.
Marvin has seldom been better, showing seriousness of the character and revealing a great deal of depth.
