A good story line.

I liked the series and liked this last book and ending to it. At the same time sad there won't be more.

Dr. Alan Gregory has been a favourite character since I started reading Stephen White's novels. However, I was disappointed with Dr. Gregory's portrayal in this last novel of the series. A thin plot, the story really never takes hold.

Disappointing end to this series. Turned Gregory into a weak, sniveling character.

Big disappointment. Considering this was the last book in the Alan Gregory series, I was expecting something much better. The plot was extremely thin and despite the multiple cameos by characters from previous books the story never really grabs the reader. The one thing I really enjoyed was the character of Jona.

It says this is his last book of the series. Hope he changes his mind and writes more. It really helps if you remember details from the series or at least read line of fire's sad tho that all his original characters from the series are either killed off or someone you never knew after all

Start with his first novel

Stephen White's Alan Gregory series concludes with; a resonable tale, old plot and the evolving behavior and attributes of his main character. The aforementioned in my opinon has made reading of the latest books very difficult. Among these is a whining, paranoid, egocentric, who analyzes his; wife, wedding, love life, and other personal situations like they are all unattached, unrelated patients/ object Also, it seems in this storyline situations are fabricated in an attempt to enhance an aura of drama and suspense. I'm sure Alan will be back, but it's a good time for a break.

So sad that this series has come to an end. Will look forward to new stories with new characters, with richly woven plot lines, as Stephen White can do so well.

Read this one soon after reading "Line of Fire" to ensure remembrance of characters, motives, and events which effect the plot in this novel. Otherwise, a reader could get lost in so many details and connections. For me, this novel is not a stand alone nor one to be recommended as a first read by this author.
The action in this novel focuses entirely on Alan. There are no distractions of stories..subplots.. told by his clients. Alan comes across as being paranoid, close to breaking and in need of a therapist himself. Interesting to see how the author ties up the clues into a tidy ending, however manipulated or far out they may seem. I thought at one point in the story that both Alan and Sam would kill each other because of mistrust, but I was wrong. White kept some of his characters alive while killing off others. Having read all of his Alan Gregory novels, I hope White continues to write as I enjoy his storytelling style.
