The opening scene copies the much better "The Tunnel" series, where a French politician is found dead with the body also centered halfway between two countries, and attempts a similarly complicated plot. However, it's frequently gratuitously violent, with minorities and women constantly portrayed as victims, including lots of swearing and voyeuristic scenes: immigrants drinking poisoned water, young women targeted and kidnapped from Juarez factories, a violent rape, a nude crackhead, and the drawn-out death of an adolescent boy. Diane Kruger is the autistic US detective and Demián Bichir is the macho, adulterous Mexican
detective--there's not much chemistry between them. Will definitely pass on season two.

Extremely Disappointing, bad acting, poor script, just not as good as the original Swedish and Danish series. Too bad as I was looking forward to an english version but this is not it. The lead actor just doesn't pull off the unique, special, she is way to average.

Good show, might move a little slow for some people though.

A very slow first few episodes. You may lose patience.
I persevered. This series gradually gripped me, tightly.
A strong, tense study of familial love and the anguish of loss. As well as the coin of life with trust and friendship on one side and greed and depravity on the other.
Oh, I might mention also some blood and spilled guts.

Unfortunately, having seen the original version, this one does not come close to it. I am sure that if you are not into foreign film then this might be okay. There is another one called Tunnel from UK/France that apparently is identical to the original but I think I will pass being that I thoroughly enjoyed the original.
For those who are viewing this one, you may want to try the Foreign original version just because the female lead is sooooo much quirkier and better.

What's remarkable about THE BRIDGE is that it manages to honor all the crusty old conventions of serial detective television drama, such as an evil mastermind who chooses to toy with his prey, at the same time it comes off as refreshingly novel. No small achievement. The performances are excellent -- Diane Kreuger, Ted Levine, Matthew Lillard -- though at times you can see Demian Bichir, who plays the Chihuahua State police detective, straining to come up with the requisite pathos. Mostly THE BRIDGE is a testament to crafty screenwriting. This is a constantly captivating whodunnit. You won't be disappointed.

The US detective played by Diane Kruger is "so painfully awkward" because she is high-functioning autistic. Actor Ted Levine's character is her mentor and helps her, especially to continue as a police detective.
This element may not defy belief in Scandinavia -- it's a different society.
It defies belief in the US. How could she have even been accepted at a police academy?
The original Swedish/Danish series, "Bron/Broen" has become a franchise. Besides this US/Mexico version, there's supposed to be a British/French version -- in the Channel Tunnel?
I don't recall that the first season of the Scandinavian version scattered around sub-plots for the next season. For that reason alone, the Scandinavian version was better.

Just finishing the last episode - what a fantastic series! I'm really disappointed to hear that there are only two seasons. The US detective is so painfully awkward that it's kind of amusing. I adore the Mexican detective's character. The border town setting, and the very real Juarez killings make for excellent, thrilling, scary and just plain rainy day entertainment. It is gory (I'm very much an anti-gore viewer - it's just gross), but in forensics it's easier to process. I love this series - can't wait to see the Euro version, too.

The Swedish/ Danish original of this series was far superior to this rehash.

Though realistically rough and violent with several graphic shots, it's one of its kind. It's neither better or worst than its Swedish version which I also enjoyed watching. It's simply the same scenario set in a totally two "different" place, mentality and evil style...

Lt. Wade: I'm sorry, am I interrupting your snack time?
Det. Cooper: [yogurt cup in one hand, spoon in the other] I'm just topping off my good bacteria, boss. You've got good and bad bacteria in your stomach and they're at war.
Lt. Wade: [takes yogurt and hurls it into wastebasket] Yeah? Well now they're in the trash.
