Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses caused an uproar in the Islamic world when it was published in 1989. Iran announced a fatwa, or death sentence, against the author and Rushdie has been living in hiding ever since. In this interview, Salman Rushdie provides a rare personal insight into his work and his life, and speaks openly about the fatwa, his survival, the murder of his Japanese publisher, and assaults on other publishers. He also discusses his book The Moor's Last Sigh, which has not escaped controversy either and has been banned by Islamic fundamentalists.
