A young Englishwoman obsessed with an indecipherable past, Grey comes to Tokyo seeking a lost piece of film footage of the notorious 1937 Nanking Massacre, footage some say never existed. Only one man can help Grey. A survivor of the massacre, he is now a visiting professor at a university in Tokyo. But he will have nothing to do with her. So Grey accepts a job in an upmarket nightspot, where a certain gangster may be the key to gaining the professor's trust. An old man in a wheelchair surrounded by a terrifying entourage, the gangster is rumored to rely on a mysterious elixir for his continued health.

This was an excellent book. I hope that the last century insights into last century Chinese culture are accurate because they were were compelling and will stick with me. Half the book was written from the point of view of a very interesting character, very focused and intelligent but not like "most people". I sometimes have a hard time getting into a new book or author but this one grabbed me from the start and was gripping all the way through.

The past links with the present as a student with tenacity searches for an historical piece of film from the Nanking massacre during the Sino-Japanese war of 1937. Not for the squeemish but Mo Hayder has achieved a fascinating and informative novel.

Inspired by a real fragment of film taken during the 1937 Nanking massacre, the author creates a heroine who once found mention of the film and will not rest until she sees it.
The truth about the atrocities that were committed during the massacre and how they relate to her present life are not for the faint hearted.

We've got two stories melting into one. Good drive. Odd subject. Best part is the end when Grey tries to escape inside the house. Great suspence. Again, odd premise. But the story "around" this odd premise is masterful.

I found this book quite interesting since I knew very little about the actual historical event at Nanking. The main characters do not sseem very wel developed and are a little strange, but the story is an excellent tale and is based on actual events.

Great book. Left me feeling both sad and angry at the same time.

I loved this book. It was fascinating delving into the Japanese history with the twisting storyline running through at the same time.
