"Horst, the most affable vampire one is ever likely to meet, is resurrected by an occult conspiracy that wants him as a general in a monstrous army. Their plan: to create a country of horrors, a supernatural homeland. As Horst sees the lengths to which they are prepared to go and the evil they cultivate, he realizes that he cannot fight them alone. What he really needs on his side is a sarcastic, amoral, heavily armed necromancer. As luck would have it, this exactly describes his brother." --

The narraration of this book was enough to keep me interested. As for the negatives, this book definitely had humor in it, but this humor ended up taking away from the badassness of the Cabal brothers. The ending was also very anti-climatic.

This one is my favorite, by far. I loved getting to see things happening from Horst's point of view. I'm glad that he's back since he's my favorite character of this series. (He also seems to be the most moral character, which says something when the vampire is the most decent person)
When Horst is brought back, with the hope that he will help contribute to a monstrous army, he decides he should find his brother, if he's still alive, and team up with some spies to keep the country from being overrun by creatures of the night.
We get so much more character development on both Horst and Johannes. You can tell that having a soul is changing Johannes in better ways and Horst's battle with his "condition" may be changing him for the worst.
This story has a great mixture of action, fantasy, and humor. I couldn't put it down often, and where all the previous books seemed slower at the beginning, this one kept my interest all the way through and was never boring.
