Opinion

From Library Staff

Featuring lesser-known Northwest bands like Calamity Jane and Kill Sybil, No Seattle showcases the region’s thriving independent rock scene of the 80s and 90s.

A 2-disc, 28 song compilation from the usually reliable Soul Jazz label. This is one of their weaker releases. On the plus side, it provides a greater context for the oft mis-represented and perhaps prematurely enshrined era of music known as grunge. Yes, there was some great music, but it ushered in a lot of terrible "alternative" music. I do appreciate that this compilation goes deep and there are very few bands I'd heard of, but, then again, some of these bands (Vampire Lezbos, Helltrout) are justly obscure. Deep cuts for the hardcore fan. For more on the crazy grunge scene, check out the book "Everybody Loves Our Town," pretty much everything on SubPop in the 90s, and the documentaries "Hype!" and "I'm Now."
