Becoming a teenager is never easy, although sometimes it looks like adolescents manufacture unnecessary drama. Is it really life or death if you’re not wearing the right shoes? If that girl you like doesn’t think you’re worth the time of day? If you’re flunking math? If your history teacher is giving you a hard time?

But when you’re uncertain about gender or trying to alter your gender to fit into your surroundings, the difficulties can snowball until it seems like a local disaster. Alex has just that problem. He was born with sexual organs from both sexes but his brain keeps sending him mixed messages. His parents’s decision to put him on drugs only complicates matters.

Alex’s dilemma and the steps he takes to live in a world filled with people who will judge him, hurt him or abuse him for his choice make for harsh reading. But it’s not all gloom and doom. It turns out that his androgynous look might be a benefit, at least in the right circles. However, when he lies and gets mixed up with boys and girls who don’t know what he is, that’s when things turn interesting.

This isn’t the sort of coming-of-age novel where the parents come to terms with their child’s sexual awakening. Alex’s parents don’t understand and are constantly trying to force their notion of Alex’s happiness onto him and vice versa. His father wants to try but sees Alex as being a weirdo and his mother…well, she’s got her own problems.

The novel doesn’t present any easy answers or final resolutions. Life isn’t like that, especially when you’re negotiating around other people’s emotional landmines. But Alex emerges triumphant because she decides what she wants for herself. Screw everyone else if they don’t get it.

This quick, simple book is not the greatest work of literature that I’ve read this year, but it is important. I’m not sure if I know anyone who is intersex, but Alex and her counterpart are such authentic characters that I feel like I do now. Written from the point of view of a fourteen year old with ambiguous genitalia but raised as a boy, Alex as Well explores what could happen when said teenager stops taking their medication and begins to explore the possibilities of living as their genuine self. It is a self-realization story with just the barest hint of crush-y feelings, with not a romance in sight, and that in itself was refreshing. And yes, I did start reading this book a couple hours before I was supposed to meet people and spent a half hour outside finishing it up.

Sometimes this book leaves you wondering what is going on. I picked this book out because I knew it was about an intersex person. It was interesting that she thought of herself as two different people in her head, male and female. And yes the mother's blog left me wanting to punch her in the face.

one of three book I read this year featuring a character with a intersex condition. This one was my least favorite. I am not intersex nor do I know anyone that is. I have read a few true life accounts. I am that anyone actually battles with their male voice in their head. also I did see the point of the chapters that were written blog style by the mother. they only leave the reader to be more enraged at her.
