In oil producing countries like Nigeria and Russia, companies are systematically burning off natural gas produced as a drilling by-product to save money. Gas flaring burns one third of Europe's total demand every year, resulting in 400 million tons of greenhouse gases and contributing to climate change. Village residents located near flaring stations in Nigeria are suffering from poor health and have crops contaminated by heavy metals and acid rain. In Ecuador a state-run oil company is showing how it is possible to put natural gas to use as an energy source and protect the climate at the same time.
