"Costello works wonders on the page, employing precise prose to craft a resonant narrative out of a rather ordinary lifetime. ...there is often beauty to be found in the mundane." (Publisher's Weekly)

I'm sure this was written with "Brooklyn " in mind. A more modern telling of the Irish girl who immigrates to America. If you like sad books this ones for you. Despite that, I did enjoy the story. As an American I can hardly fathom the lonliness immigrants experience.

This novel depicts the whole life of a quiet, lonely Irish girl who moves to New York City where she becomes a nurse and mother. It is the story of an inner life. Although there are some rough patches in the story-telling, overall the book succeeds.
