This video is from 1993. The picture quality is very good and the audio quality is good. The five acts are approximately equal in length for a total time of about 2 hours. There is no sound from the audience and the applause has been eliminated. I found the opera to be quite creepy. ghostly demons scurry around throughout the opera.
There is a heavy religious element to this opera.
The music is often dark and agitated. There is
nudity in the final act so sensitive viewers may want to avoid this production. The performance
by Gorchakova is very good. She sings and acts well. My favorite character is the Inquisitor. They
cast him perfectly. If you like the Grand Inquisitor
in Don Carlo you will like this Inquisitor. The sets
are somewhat minimalist which strikes me as appropriate. Lighting is gloomy. I recommend
this DVD to anyone who likes dark, disturbing
