Jonathan Kozol has written a poignant description of dementia set alongside a loving memoir of his father. One may wonder at Kozol's determination to keep his father alive for as long as he does, despite what becomes profound dementia. There is much food for thought here as well as the sweetness of the father-son relationship. Both men contributed much to American society - Jonathan as an important figure in American public education and his father as an influential neurologist.

An extremely articulate memoir - in a way, this is a dual memoir. The award-winning author tells the story of his father's decline into Alzheimer's Disease, but the tale is rich with details from the equally intelligent approach of the father, a clinical psychologist who brought a remarkable amount of self-awareness into the initial stages of his own case. Even transcripts of later correspondence from the father to the son told here offer a fascinating view of the father's trained mind gradually losing its moorings. The book closes with a reflective essay on the process of memory itself, as now understood by neuroscience.

Such a well written story of the end of Kozol's parents lives.
