"In 2003, Albert Podell realized that he'd been to 110 countries in the world. What if, he wondered, he could go to them all? He would set foot in not just the well-known tourist destinations in Europe or the vacation spots in Latin America, but the little-known, far-off lands that most people don't know exist...Podell recounts the misunderstandings, detours, accidents, breakdowns, robberies, and even wars that he needed to overcome to visit every corner of Earth. He describes his encounters with voodoo rituals, fruit-bat pie, the Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon, Cuban counterintelligence agents, the New Guinea wigmen, camel caravans, the Lord's Resistance Army, and much, much more. With a wry, exuberant style, Podell's observations on the unusual and exotic places that lay beyond the usual tourist trails make this book a standout on the travel writing shelf"--

An enjoyable book about a man who spent 50 years on his quest to visit every country on Earth. While he doesn't go into detail on every country, he does on enough to hold your interest. As one commenter mentioned, his roving eye can get a bit annoying. Otherwise, this is a great book for travel lovers.

Enjoyed the book and completed all 354 pages in a week. With traveling being something I would like to get into it was great to hear all his experiences , culture overviews and planning process. Throughout the book he went in great detail allowing me to even add a few locations onto my bucket list. All and all this book was a great read and I'm even considering reading his book prior to this one "Who needs a road" where he writes about their record breaking automobile voyage.

Fun to read. I wish I had noticed the list at the back of book that lists which countries he visited in which year. It would have been nice to have a sense of how old he was and helped me place what was going on in the world at that time.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. True the aging Lothario thread gets a bit worn. Having visited many of these countries in their prime, this gives an excellent, often (regrettably) sad, insight into what our old globe has lost. From a historical perspective most definitely worth reading. Many chuckles, too. Experienced travellers will equate.

A fun romp across the map for people like me who love to travel and hear about other cultures. Podell's roving eye gets a bit tiresome--it's time to grow up, buddy!
