Unlike the milquetoast writing of modern crime fiction, the writing style of Ross Macdonald was gritty. It matched the taste of a tougher generation of readers who survived World War II. For fans of the hardboiled private eye genre, I would rate "The Ivory Grin" at 4.25 stars.
