Flex was a one-day book. I started reading it, and I couldn’t stop. The writing is excellent, the premise unique, and the action feels almost non-stop. The pacing is fantastic, the characters are believable (though I can’t believe doughnut-man is NOT a ‘mancer. Something fishy about his ability to always have doughnuts on hand!), and I’d find a way to handle the backlash/flux, so can I be a bibliomancer now, please and thank you?!

One of the things I liked most was the relationship between Valentine and Paul. Given the situation, the author could have totally taken in them in the utterly boring direction of smoochies and hearts, but instead they seem to be just friends. It is so rare to see this that I really hope the platonic relationship continues into the next book. We need more fantastic examples in literature that men and women can be friends without one of them being gay, or both wanting to (not so) secretly jump each other’s bones.

Can I just back to the ‘mancer aspect for a moment? Basically, you obsess so much over something that you gain the ability to do magic with/around it. Now, for me that’s perfectly fine, because I’d happily dive into the books, but… could you imagine ‘mancers from Tumblr? Oh, sweet baby drama llamas, run for the flippin’ hills!

This really was a fantastic book. One that I happily give a top-rating too. I highly recommend it for who wants to read a bit of unique urban fantasy!
